Dr. Jay Akef D.D.S. Periodontist

Dr. Akef has been dedicated to the field of dentistry since 1984 when he was working as a volunteer dental assistant. He went to Loyola School of Dentistry in Chicago from 1985 to 1989 and graduated with honors in the Periodontic Department. His education continued for two more years in order to obtain a certificate in the field of Periodontics and Implantology.

Dr. Akef moved back to Los Angeles in 1991 and worked as a Periodontist in different offices in addition to teaching at UCLA. He opened his office in San Diego in 1995 at the De Anza View Medical Center, where he performs a variety of services in the field of Periodontics and Implantology.

About seventy percent of the population over the age of thirty has gum disease, which could involve only the gum (Gingivitis) and/or loss of jaw bone around the teeth (Periodontitis). These conditions could be either localized around certain teeth or all of the teeth. Periodontal disease is the major cause of tooth loss. Dental implants function as replaced teeth and they can get gum disease as well with poor oral hygiene, a condition known as Implantitis. Our office deals with the prevention and correction of gum disease around both teeth and implants.
