Welcome to our website. We hope that by reviewing the information given, as well as visual aids, Dental Implants and the field of Periodontics will be easier to comprehend. Our office is dedicated to help you save your existing teeth and replace the missing teeth with possible implants. We emphasize the concept of teamwork with the family dentist. If you think of the general dentist as the engineer for the teeth, constructing what shows above the gum: crowns, fillings, etc. we are the engineers for the foundation and supporting structures of the teeth and dental implants.

Teeth are made up of two parts: the crown, the section above the gum, and the root that sits inside the jaw bone which is covered by the gum. When teeth are lost, one of the possible ways to replace them is to place dental implants in the jaw bone which act as the roots. In a way, implants are artificial roots made up of titanium metal. After a few months the implants will integrate (attach) to the jaw bone and will be ready for crown construction.

Titanium is a very inert material and the body does not reject it. The reason that an implant may not integrate (attach) to the jaw are mostly inadequate treatment planning, poor bone quality and improper care with poor oral hygiene.

About seventy percent of the population over the age of thirty has gum disease, which could involve only the gum (Gingivitis) and/or loss of jaw bone around the teeth (Periodontitis). These conditions could be either localized around certain teeth or all of the teeth. Periodontal disease is the major cause of tooth loss. Dental implants function as replaced teeth and they can get gum disease as well with poor oral hygiene, a condition known as Implantitis. Our office deals with the prevention and correction of gum disease around both teeth and implants.
